Ugly greed

Sir: One doesn't become and remain a Spectator subscriber (as I am) just to read articles one agrees with, but the silliness of Sion Simon does raise the blood tempera- ture a little. He was never disenfranchised as he claims he was (`The night we couldn't believe it', 2 May). All that happened was that the Tories got in, and got in again — as they deserved to. (Sorry, I admit he was dis- enfranchised by being too young for the first eight Thatcher years. What great days those were when a politician actually did what she said she would dol) It is somewhat worrying that he, as a Labour party apparatchik, deems his feel- ing of being in control as overriding; all that has happened is that the Labour party has won an election — as they deserved to. I dislike the ugly, greedy, tasteless milieu of Cook, Irvine, Robinson and Cherie; I don't know what Heimat means, but Heimweh is German for homesickness. A phrase in sup- port of Sir Alec, clearly! Bringing More (Kenneth, I presume) and Blake (the spy, I presume) into the argument seems bizarre, even by Mr Simon's standards.
