Private beds

Sir: I am delighted that Mrs Barbara Castle is to do away with private beds in National Health hospitals. Now that the chips are down we shall at last see whether the morality of free enterprise medical care will be sustained.

Private medical insurance schemes like BUPA and PPP will stop supporting the state medical services to the tune of £30,000,000 a year and be forced to provide a complete service for their clients thus saving them the indignity of being barracked by the odious Mrs Brookstone and her ilk.

And skilled medical staff, including doctors and consultants, will be able to choose whether to continue to sacrifice themselves in the state medical service or whether to work in a fully private sector where their training and skills will be adequately rewarded.

These two groups have the solution to our crumbling health service in their hands. Let us hope that they have the foresight and courage to make the correct moral decision.
