Irish largesse

Sir: One missive was conspicuously absent from the testimonials produced on behalf of Sir Nicholas Scott (`Braying in Manor Street', 9 November): a note from his doc- tor confirming that he was taking pills which, if combined with a few drops of wine, could induce complete intoxication.

As to Irish Embassy parties, everyone knows they are famous for their bibulous- ness. That is the only reason why support- ers of the Union of Great Britain and Northern Ireland go to them. Many of us were taught by the late Peter Utley to relieve the opposition of the largesse it sup- plied as it went about its work (which sadly it has done with some success now that Peter is no longer here to impede its machi- nations).
