Mr. Lloyd George's more important speech was delivered at Cameroon

last Saturday, anddealt withlreland. Policemen and soldiers, Mr. Lloyd George most reasonably and forcibly pointed out, "don't go burning houses and shooting men wantonly.' How, then, did reprisals arise ? The reason was that during the past year 109 policemen had been shot dead. The policemen had endured patiently, but at last their patience had given way and there had been "some severe hitting back." No word of condemnation of the police murders had been uttered by Mr. Arthur Griffith or any Sinn Feiner. The Sims Fein defence was that there was a state of war and that the shooting was justifiaL "But," said Mr. Lloyd George, "if it really is a case of war, it should be war on both sides. Are the police to stand up to be shot like dogs without any attempt at defence?" The conviction of the assassins had become impossible in Ireland owing to the general demoralization. It was essential that "the real murder gang" should be broken up. "Union I am mistaken, we shall do it."
