The military results may prove very far-reaching. In the first

place, the French, on its south side, have got far past the terrible, menacing underground fortress of Combles, for such in truth it is, and the time is drawing near when it will be in so much danger of actual investment that the Germans will have to evacuate it, and so save us and our Allies the enormous c sualties which would come from storming it. Next, the French by their new advance have got noith-east of Peronne, and so assumed a position threatening the latter fortress. Finally, the French are now well astride of the great road which runs north and south from Bapaume to Peronne.
