The Universe of Hatred

SIR,—According to official but incomplete figures, German dead in the Second World War were just over ten million, including civilians in air raids, on treks from the east and in battles inside Germany. The Russians lost well over twenty million, not in- cluding the unknown number killed by their own security forces. In Poland, 4.52 million lost their lives in German occupation and about 1.5 million (an informed guess) in Russian occupation.

Cold numbers can be added on and on until the assessed total is reached (without China, since nothing can be even guessed about the dead in that country) of about fifty-five million. Fifty-five million human beings. Atheist, Moslem, Hindu, Jewish, Christian, the innocent and the guilty, the wise and the ignor- ant. They have only one thing in common; killing and being killed, they are dead.

In the name of God, are they not enough to feed the hatred of even Mordecai Richler?
