Knocking the Times

From Dr John A. H. Wylie Sir: When one is both grateful and honoured as I am to see my offering figure in the august pages of The Spectator it may be thought unseemly to crave further hospitality so soon. Nonetheless, pray forgive and permit me to correct the misprint fllusioned.' The participle which I, in fact, selected to qualify Mr Bernard Levin's bi-weekly contribution to the Times was 'illumined.' Your alternative is confusing and could be construed as disapprobation, which I entertain neither for the column nor the columnist.

How appropriately gracious was your sad valediction upon that prince of cricketers: Mr Basil D'Oliveira. He, himself, assures me that the capital D' is the proper orthography. Grievously shall we miss, so often in the moment of greatest need, the elegant fecundity of his bat and that wily destructiveness of those beguilingly innocent deliveries.
