Childish little man
Sir: Christopher Hawtree (Letters, 2 September) really is a childish little man. Normally I ignore such people, but I shall make an exception in this case and provide a modicum of the ridicule which he surely deserves.
He suggests that his idea to boost the economy by returning empty pre-paid envelopes is simple. Yes, simply wrong. For a start, there is no net economic gain on the transaction he proposes — merely a transfer of income from the wealth creating sender to the Post Office. Further, adopting a qualitative view, I fail to see how encouraging juvenile malice instead of hard work will allow Britain to imitate the Japanese economic miracle.
Mr Hawtree is a symptom of our malaise rather than a saviour. Britain will never again be a great economic force while its inhabitants lack basic education and good manners.
