Hairy belly

Sir: I would like to support S. A. Rydberg (Letters, 19 August) with reference to A. Waugh's 'Voice on Rambling' (22 July): That article indeed was a big piece of shit, A. Waugh may well be a smart aleck with a sharp pen offering a good read at times, yet his self-righteousness appeared prohibitive from being published more than once to me, and I only subscribe my second year. Has it ever been suggested to him to look down his own hairy belly (I assume he would not hint at Swedes to be hairless if he were bald himself), and to give us another of his pointed comments, yet this time on Mr Waugh and his undisputable conservatism just for a change? That, by the way, would give him a chance to answer the following question: How hard did he work, how much did he save up and pay of that page in The Spectator in which he plants all his mental 'no trespassing' signs.

Quite evidently Mr Waugh lacks sense of proportion, to say the least. I wonder who committed the folly and requested him to write an autobiography?
