Freedom food

Sir: Michael Sissons accuses the RSPCA of `trumpeting vegetarianism'. Such a stance would be a peculiar policy for the Society when in fact the RSPCA, as the world's leading animal welfare organisation, is actively pursuing improved animal welfare for farm animals through its increasingly successful Freedom Food labelling scheme.

Whilst many RSPCA members have made a personal decision to follow a vege- tarian or vegan diet, as practical animal welfarists they, together with the other members of the Society who do not follow this diet, accept that well over 90 per cent of the population consume animal and dairy products, and so together put all their efforts into ensuring that the animals involved in the food chain have the best possible life and the most painless and stress-free death; surely a sensible and uni- versally agreed aim.
