Sex before lunch

From Anne Scott-James Sir: Much as I appreciate Mary Killen's witty and ingenious solutions to problems of etiquette, I sometimes think she is too sensi- tive to the feelings of disgusting people.

On 9 September she told us of a couple who were indulging in advanced necking at a formal luncheon party. Her elaborate solution involved a whopping lie and incon- venience to other guests. Would it not have been simpler to say, 'Much as we would miss your company, would it not be best if you two went upstairs and looked for a bed- room? We could keep your food hot in the oven.'
