On Waugh on Brown

Sir: In his critique of Lord Gcorge-B rown's Memoirs (27 March) Mr Auberon Waugh states that 'there is still a Foreign Office man in Bush House vetting over- seas broadcasts on a non-voluntary basis and has been since Suez'.

This is not true. The Foreign Office representative placed at the BBC by Anthony-Eden during Suez was removed by Selwyn Lloyd under Harold Macmillan. I know because I negotiated his removal with Sir Ian Jacob.

I would add that the reasons for this decision were very much in accordance with the views that Auberon Waugh has now ex- pressed.
