Ulster Unionists

Sir: Surely it is Mr Cantwell (3 April) who is mistaken about the wishes of most Ulstermen not 'A

Conservative' (27 March).

The 'Handbook of the Ulster Question' published in 1923 by the Stationery Office in Dublin whilst attacking the whole concept of partition estimated that 44 per cent of the inhabitants of the nine counties of Ulster and 34 per cent of the inhabitants of the six coun- ties of Northern Ireland were in favour of 'the Free State'. Since then the population of the three counties in the Republic has shrunk from 330,000 to barely 200,000, whilst the population of Northern Ireland has grown from 1,250,000 to 1,500,000.

How does Mr Cantwell support his statement that the majority of Ulstermen do not wish to remain part of the United Kingdom? A. C. Baskeit 30 High Oaks Road, Welwyn Gar- den City, Herts
