Metric conspiracy

Sir: In his letter (3 April) Mr Pleetwood-Hesketh did aim at the heart of the affair. Metrication, like other revolutionary matters of t°daY, comes upon us by stealth and then later, to our surprise, we

are confronted by an accomplished fact. Coupled with the encouragement by government and institutions of this unwanted and unnecessary system of weights and measures is public ignorance or public apathy. If some coherent organisation could be instituted to voice reasoned dissidence in and out of Parliament, then many of us would rally round to support it. United action could produce results but individual effort is negligible. Lone voices are seldom heard.
