JULIETTE'S WEEKLY FROLIC

Tantalum plucked me from the slippery road to ruin with a timely win at Worcester, while an Easter excursion to Chepstow proved profitable, though not, unfortunately, for my SPECTATOR account. The flat opens at New- market and Newbury this week luring into the limelight many future stars—Mill Reef has to trounce My Swallow's stable com- panion, Breeder's Dream, in the `Greenhatre to establish Guineas' favouritism—but this is a crowd-puller, not a betting proposition. Thursday's Abernant Stakes at Newmarket has brighter gambling prospects and course and distance winner Realm, who developed into a really top-grade sprinter last year, can cope with the disappointing Lincoln Fav- ourite, Royal Smoke and Doncaster winner, Sweet Revenge.

While the champagne and strawberry season gets under way in the South, •the jumpers are still providing splendid enter- tainment in the rest of the country and I

have a strong feeling for Hinterland in the Birdlip Novices' Chase (Thursday, Chelten- ham). Having cheered him to a comfortable win at Sandown's Royal Artillery meeting, I believe he has the experience to beat a field consisting chiefly of newly-recruited hurdlers—though Conclusion could prove dangerous. Finally at Ayr on Saturday Gay Trip, none the worse for his early National exit will be strongly supported for the Scot- tish equivalent and should certainly do better than Miss Hunter and The Inventor, who may not have recovered from a far more strenuous afternoon at Aintree. However, I am more taken by the locally trained The Spaniard—last year's winner, he disap- pointed early in the season, but is coming to his best and will not be troubled by the distance. The biggest dangers could be treble scorer, Tipperwood and Prince Tino.

Assets: 87.875. Outlay: £5 to win Realm, £2 to win Hinterland and The Spaniard.
