It was stated in the Press on Thursday that a

Committee has been appointed to inquire into petrol consumption by the Departmental vehicles of the War Office, the Admiralty, the Air Ministry, and the Ministry of Munitions, all of which draw upon the Admiralty or Army Service stocks, without supervision by the Petrol Control Committee. There is urgent need of inquiry ; for the very young officer in the very large car accounts for a considerable fraction of London's street traffic, in spite of the economical advantages of trains and 'buses. The Committee may be advised to investigate the consumption of petrol by Departmental vehicles at week-ends and on Sundays, when private owners may not use their cars even for church-going. The Air Force must use petrol freely for its work ; we hope that the Committee will show the other Departments how they could save a good deal without loss of efficiency. -
