Hollywood, enemy of history

From Mr Daniel Guenzel Sir: Peter Jones's column (Ancient and modern, 10 August) on the latest attempt by Hollywood to make a film with a historical theme, this time on Hannibal, was a much-needed tonic.

Speaking as an American, I am consistently appalled by any attempt by Hollywood to portray history. How many ludicrous recent films do I have to mention to prove my point? The bios of King David, Beethoven, St Joan of Arc and Columbus are just a few. There is even a rumour that Mel Gibson wants to portray Jesus Christ. The mind boggles at such idiocies.

That an industry without enough talent in its entire ranks to produce an interesting television commercial should seriously think it can portray complex historical epochs is beyond ridiculous.
