More deception

From the Revd Hubert V. Little Sir: Your editorial 'An Act of Deception' leads me to report our Society's protest at the way in which the public has been misled by the Government on the life-anddeath issue of smoking. By squandering money on research to establish a ' leap e table ' of toxicity of the various brands of cigarettes, the Government lulls the public into the false impression that ' safer ' cigarettes with less nicotine will result.

But, while it is nicotine on which smokers get 'hooked,' it is the carcinogenic substances in the smoke which cause cancer.

At our Society's recent meeting, our President, Dr Howard Williams (chest physician with outstanding experience of 'Stop Smoking clinics), supported by the evidence of a qualified chemist, and the declaration of our former President, Sir Selwyn Selwyn-Cler'ee, KBE, FRCP (former Principal Medical Officer to the Ministery of Health), affirmed that a reduced nicotine content in cigarettes only led smokers to smoke more cigaretes, and thus to inhale more of the cancer-causing fumes. "The only safe cigarette is the un-lit one."

Meanwhile cigarette-smoking causes two deaths an hour from lung cancer. And the public is lulled into complacency.
