No tragedy

Sir: I would like to thank you for your kind feature in the Bookend Column (February 3), but may I correct one apparent misapprehension?

The policy of budget-cost novels published by this company to which you refer was inaugurated before the recently-departed editor joined us. Your article tends to suggest that it was because of this policy that he left the company. This is not true and I can assure you that the words indicating a tragic parting are a little dramatic, bearing in mind the full circumstances. In fact, New English Library will be publishing the next four books that he produces — which perhaps gives room for further thought on the remarks of Bookbuyer. H. P.
