The good men

Sir: I must congratulate Mr R. J. Bevins on his article under 'Where have the good men gone' in your February 3 edition, not for his good sense, but for being so able to show his true inward feelings instead of conveying his opinions in plain decent terms expected of an ex-Conservative politician. I do trust that Mr Bevins does not consider himself one of the "good men ".

Everyone is entitled to their opinion and I am a believer in free speech, and even Mr Bevins is entitled to write what he thinks of the Prime Minister and the Government on his opinion of their failings. Having done so in such despicable terms, his opinions could only be of interest to despicable people. Having a wide circle of readers, no doubt despicable people do read The Spectator, so Mr Bevins may be lucky to get some appreciation for his efforts.
