Lord Hartington won his election in the Rossendale Division of

Lancashire this day week by a triumphant majority,—namely, by 1,450 votes. For Lord Hartington there polled 5,399 electors ; for Mr. Newbiggin, 3,949. Of course, Lord Harlington could not have been returned but for the loyal support of the Con- servatives, but he intimated in his speech at Derby on Monday that he bad received of Liberal votes probably not less than some 2,500. As, of course, Mr. Newbiggin received all the Irish vote, it is probable that nearly as many English Liberals voted for Lord Harlington as voted for Mr. Newbiggin. We were therefore right in anticipating Lord Hartington's success. It is notable enough that of the Lancashire divisions, the Unionists have in this Election won no fewer than four divisions from the Ministerialists ; while the Ministerialists have won only a single division from the Unionists. And even where the Ministerialists have held their own in Lancashire, they have held it by a greatly reduced majority; while the Unionists who have held their own have held it by a greatly increased majority. Lan- cashire is decidedly opposed to Home-rule.
