Into Europe

Raymond Keene

England have qualified for the final of the 8th European Team Championship (to be held in Plovdiv or Moscow 1983) by defeating Iceland 81/2 -71/2 at Middles- brough last weekend. The third country in our group, Sweden, had previously been beaten 9'/ -61/2 by England, and 9-7 by Iceland, so we needed only to draw with the Icelanders to ensure our fourth consecutive qualification. Individual scores (English names first) were: Nunn 1 1 v F. Olafsson; Speelman 1/2 1/2 v Sigurjonsson; Stean 0 0 v Petursson; Keene 1/2. 1/2 v Arnason; Mestel 1/2 v H. Olafsson; P. Littlewood 1 I v Johansson; Hartston 1/2 0 v Hjarturson; and Taulbut 1/2 v Bjarnason.

At the close of the match, Fridrik Olafsson, not only top board for Iceland but also President of Fide, paid tribute to England's chess progress, claiming it to he the most rapid in the world today. Ironical- ly it was Olafsson who had been the victim of the most brilliant game.

My next two reports will be direct from the Las Palmas Interzonal, where Jonathan Mestel is representing England.
