Boorish

From Sir John Nutting, Bt, QC Sir: Lord Hanson is surely justified in tak- ing Lord Charles Spencer-Churchill to task (Letters, 10 June). Writing is a means of communication for which Lord Charles shows little familiarity and less aptitude.

But there is another reason why it would have been better if Lord Charles had stayed his pen and desisted from writing the disin- genuous, inappropriate and offensive letter about his 'old friend' Rupert Hambro (Let- ters, 3 June). For almost 30 years, Rupert Hambro has been an industrious trustee of the Blenheim Estates. They have not been easy years for anyone occupying that role and the last decade has been particularly difficult.

In these circumstances it is odd indeed that Lord Charles should have written as he did, thereby exposing himself to charges of boorishness and ingratitude from Rupert Hambro's real 'old friends'.
