THE EMPEROR NICHOLAS AFTER LANDSERIL

Mr. Hogarth has published a lithograph from a sketch by Sir Edwin, evidently done in a hurry, but forming one of the most individual portraits we know of the late Emperor of Russia. He is represented standing, very straight and tall, in evening costume and in profile, with head slightly depressed, and hand holding his hat behind his back. Most por- traits give little beyond a model of a splendid man, here is a certain defiant, browbeating, and shifty look, espeeially in the eye. There is a peculiar character rendered in the head undoubtedly ; but the exact shade of expression may be dependent somewhat on the slightness of execution.
