Lost chances down under

Sir: I have read the article by Anthony Burney in your issue dated 19 April, and I would agree, as I am sure most of us would who are con- cerned with maintaining the British-Australian trade link, that much needs to be done to stimulate new interest amongst British exporters in the expanding Australian market. This is precisely what the Australian British Trade Association has been seeking to do through- out its existence, which began in Australia in 1910.

ABTA in fact provides the `small team of people in both Sydney and Melbourne' and elsewere in Australia, as well as in London, to do all the things that Mr Burney advocates should be done, and assumes incorrectly to have been overlooked. In addition, the Asso- ciation performs a number of practical and specialised services concerning tariffs and trade promotion, both of which are increas- ingly important in the context of Australian trade and general casework as well.

A trade association is only as strong as its members make it, and, like most others, ABTA would gladly welcome newcomers to its ranks. Any of your readers who would like to have further details about the Australian British Trade Association should write to the Director (Inc), Mr K. Wallis, at 42 Leicester Square, London WC2.
