Mr. Lloyd George and M. Painleve, the French Premier, hurried

to Italy last week and met Signor Orlando, the Italian Premier, at Rapallo. General Smote and Sir Henry Wilson accompanied Mr. Lloyd George, and General Sir William Robertson and General Poch, who were already in Italy, joined them in conference on November 5th, 6th, and 7th. It was semi-officially announced in Rome two days later that the Conference had determined to create a Supreme Political Council of the Allies for the Western Front, assisted by a permanent Central Military Committee. General Foch, General Cadoma, and General Wilson had been appointed members of this Committee, and General Diaz, General Cadoma's Chief of Staff, had succeeded to the chief command of the Italian Army.
