SHORTER NOTICES.

This is the third " popular" work on cancer which we have received for review during the last few months. Dr. Burford's

little book is addressed especially to the nursing profession, and is written in simple unteclurical language. The particular point which the author desires to stress is that the body possesses natural protective powers against malignancy, and that these powers can be stimulated and amplified. The surgeon by removing the main mass of the offending cells can enable the body to deal effectively with the enemy's scattered, but even more dangerous, forces. But the key to the cancer problem is ultimately in the hands of the physician. Dr. Burford is a homoeopathist, and he records several interesting cases of malignant disease which responded to homoeopathic treatment, cases whose malignancy was testified to by the microscope. He regrets that so much time, devoted work and treasure are granted to research into the biological niceties of cancer ; he would like to see research directed to "a finer adjustment of the controls which Nature operates." Naturally, as a homoeopathist, he looks to homoeopathy to provide the specific means by which such control shall be established. PREVENTION OF CANCER. By D. A. Carruthers, M.D.,
