A case (Attorney-General v. the Dean and Chapter of Ripon Cathedral) which is down for hearing before Mr. Justice Uthwatt at an early date is likely to arouse considerable interest in both ecclesiastical and musical circles. The issue, as I understand it, is between the Dean and the organist, the Dean desiring to modify the musical character of some of the Cathedral services and the organist questioning his authority to do so. Whatever the finding of the Court it will prliumably (though not quite necessarily ; cathedral statutes are not all identical) apply to cathedral services generally. Singularly reminiscent of Barchester.
