SER,—In your review of "An Irish Novel" on October 3rd, you quote "By curing the black cow that died" as a blunder. It is not an error at all, but an archaism, and gives the etymo- logical meaning of the word "cure," which is from the Latin cure. I quote from Cardinal Newman's "Lectures on Justifi- cation :"—" To cure a patient, that is, to heal or restore to health, is properly nothing more than to take care of him."—I
