In regard to the situation at this point the Times

published on Friday an exceedingly interesting letter from the Hague describing the experiences of "a well-known Dutch journalist," who has lately returned from a tour through Alsace-Lorraine, and has also visited the German lines before Verdun. In the area south of Metz, German officers to whom he spoke expressed themselves as by no means satisfied with the progress of affairs. They told him that the French artillery had proved itself superior to the German, and asserted that it reached at least two kilometres further than their own. Generally the Germans appear to have admitted to the Dutchman that " they are not by a long way where they would like to be."
