Wandering ethnic persons

Sir: When is a traveller a gypsy? Christopher Howse of the Catholic Herald raised an interesting question in the disputed areas of race and culture in his letter last week. The National Gypsy Council itself has its own difficulties in this regard, because their members are by definition individualist members of our society. The Commission for Racial Equality must realise that, as a result of this kind of test case, it will eventually render itself redundant. A truly multi-cultural society should not of course need such a commission. Those of us who like to think of ourselves as English and of that happy breed have a tendency to live in a little English world of our own. I consider myself English, but of Cornish and Welsh descent. Where shall I put up my caravan?
