are short histories of successive strikes, and these chapters, though valu- able as reflecting on the political economy of such combinations, do not contain any theory on the whole subject. Much of the matter collected by Mr. Ward is interesting, and his work will serve as a handy-book to a question which engrosses so much public attention. But we think he might have made his book much better by adopting a different plan of composition.
