Chess no. 348

PHILIDOR

Specially contributed by R. Hancock (Iver. Bucks). White to play and mate in two moves; solution next week.

Solution to no. 347 (Oudot): R - Kt 6, threat Q-B 6. 1 B-K 4; 2 Q-Q Kt I. I ...

Kt-K 4; 2 Kt -Q 4. I P-K 4; 2 Q-K B I.

Interesting self-blocks and interference on Black's K 4.

In the typical forms of the Ruy Lopez, White tries to maintain a grip on the centre and slowly

201 build up a king's side attack; in doing this, however, he frequently gets behindhand. with his develop.' mein and many of the Black defences (the Marshall Attack is thp most notable example) attempt ,to exploit thii and break through before White has consolidated his grip. Here is an example of what c/In happen when White plays weakly.

White, Mien& Black, Caminade. Opening, Ruy Lopez. (Monaco, 1967.)

5 Q - K 2 .. . This (the Worrall Attack) is one of the wayi of avoiding the 'Open Defence' (5 0 - 0, Kt X PI: however it gives White little against correct play and 5. 0 - 0 is better. 5

P - Q Kt 4 6 B - Kt 3 11 - 13 4 7 P - Q R 4 11 - Kt 2. All interesting pawn offer which White cannot well accept, e.g. ti P x P. P x P; 9 R X R.

Q x It: 10 Q x P. Kt x P: II Q- B 4, B x P ch: 12 K - Q 1 (12 K - K 2 or B I?. B - R 3!). Kt - Q 3 anu Black stands well.

I P - Q 3 P - R 3. It is desirable to prevent B - Kt 5.

9 Q Kt - Q 2' . Starting on a manoeuvre that is both too slow and, by failing to control the centre, allows Black to get the upper hand. 9 Kt - 13 3 keeping pressure on Kt P and on Q 5 is correct.

10 Kt - B I . . . If Black would allow White to play Kt. - K 3 followed by P - R 3. P - Kt 4. Kt - B 5 no doubt White would get an excellent attack-but when, wasonhr do.
