Craniology

Sir: The answer to Stephen Harris's ques- tion (Letters, 21 July) is to be found on page 61 of Alan Judd's excellent biography of Ford Madox Ford. Stephen Crane (1871-1900) wrote The Red Badge of Cour- age and lived near Ford in Kent in the 1890s. Hart Crane (1898-1936) was a minor poet of self-destructive tendencies who is only mentioned in the biography as a possible 'prototype' for the character of Henry Martin in Ford's novel, The Rash Act. The mistaken attribution in the review is my fault.
