Q. For the last 12 years I have had my

hair cut by a stylist who has done an adequate job and made me laugh. When I went for my last appointment. I found that she had been called away and had booked me in to have my hair done by someone else. I was full of misgivings, but sat obediently while this new person, who didn't make me laugh at all, snipped away. In the end he did a marvellous job. My friends have congratulated me on my new hairstyle and now tell me that they never thought my old stylist did me particularly well. I would like the new person to do my hair, but feel embarrassed to be sitting in his chair with my old friend, of whom I have become very fond, snipping away at someone beside me. Flow can I arrange to have my hair done by the new stylist without giving offence?

Name withheld, Banbury A. Address your old stylist in conspiratorial

tones. 'I'm going to let that poor little chap do my hair for a bit,' you can whisper. 'I've got to be discreet but, put it this way [nod portentously], he needs someone like me to confide in more than you do.' Shake your head enigmatically as she begs you to elaborate, then boost her self-esteem by adding martyrishly, 'I'll really miss you and the laughs, but at my age, let's face it, I mustn't be vain about my hair if there's someone I can help. .
