The Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce met on Tuesday, and resolved upon a petition against the proposed remission of one half of the duty on malt, and the threatened doubling and extension of the tax on houses. The Town-Council adopted a similar petition, on the motion of the Lord Provost ; who showed that under the alteration of the House-tax, Edin- burgh would pay 27,7521. instead of 11,5001. A motion to petition against the downward extension of the Income-tax was rejected by 15 to 12. Both petitions were forwarded to Mr. Macaulay.

At a meeting held on Wednesday in the Trades' Hall of Glasgow, over which the Lord Provost presided, it was resolved, on a motion of the Earl of Glasgow, to erect a monument to the memory of Sir Robert Peel.
