reviews. Once again, in his review of Julian Opie's exhibition at the Hayward Gallery (Arts, 27 November), Mr Auty brings up his pet hate-word 'Duchamp'. Duchamp' is Mr Auty's way of saying 'I don't under- stand'.

Contemporary art has moved on a long way from Duchamp — Duchamp is merely the point at which Mr Auty got lost.

If a critic is consistently incapable of appreciating so wide a field of contempo- rary art ('What, if anything, does this all mean?' says Mr Auty), should that critic be doing the job? I think you would be doing your readers a great service if you took contemporary art more seriously and appointed a more serious critic.
