'Mythic' meals

From Mr Jeremy Taylor

Sir: I had just killed a persistent Canary fly with my subscribed copy of the latest Spec- tator when something on page 81 attracted my immediate attention. In a restaurant review (27 November) Dylan Jones had said, 'I've eaten at the Ivy since it opened, nearly a decade ago' and I double-took. In the mid-Sixties I used to eat rather a lot at the Ivy, once with the agent Patricia Mac- Naughtan and her client John Barry. Sir John Gielgud arrived while we were lunch- ing and paused near a table where the actor Charles Gray was alone. Gielgud said, 'Oh, for an awful moment I thought you were that terrible actor Charles Gray. Oh, my goodness, I'm sorry; you are.' My father also used to eat at the Ivy, once with Tommy Handley and, I think, 'Professor' Jimmy Edwards. Perhaps it was an act of imagina- tion on all our parts?
