Company Strip-tease

SIR,—An interesting comment on the proposed measure that would oblige companies to declare donations made to party funds was afforded by a French banker, who recounted the following tale.

A certain well-known French company, a client of his bank, sent a large cheque, just before the 1965 presidential elections in France, to the asso- ciation supporting General de Gaulle. They also sent a large cheque to the association supporting M. Mitterand. A further large cheque was sent to the association supporting M. Lecanuet. A similar cheque was sent to the association supporting M. Tixier-Vignancour. A very small cheque was sent to the association supporting M. Marcilhacy. No cheque was sent to the association supporting M. Barbu.
