Morals and Politics

Ste,—It is interesting to read about the troubles of the Harrow East constituency, and to recall that on June 17, 1963, Commander Courtney abstained from voting with the Government in the division following the debate on Mr. Profumo's resignation.

At a public meeting soon after that debate, Com- mander Courtney is reported as saying to the press: 'I have warned the Prime Minister personally, and the Government on more than one occasion, about the problem of Russian espionage activities.' He then went on to say: 'Of course it is a moral issue, but don't let us be smug about this thing. I don't suppose any of us would like to have a certain in- stance in our past revealed to the public by the gentlemen of the press.... On the other hand, a man who cannot control his own life is not fit to be in charge of the lives of others.' (Harrow Observer, June 20, 1963.)
