Last night's Gazette contains this announcement-

" Whitehall, 16th January.

"The Queen has been pleased -to direct letters patent to be passed under the Great Seal, granting the dignity of a Baron of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Maud unto the Fight Hon. Sir Charles Theophilus Metcalfe, Bart., G.C.B., and Captain-General and Governor-in-Chief at her Majesty's Provinces of Canada, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia, and of the Island of Prince Ed- ward, and Governor-General of all her Majesty's Provinces on the Continent of North America and of the Island of Prince Edward, and to the heirs male of his body lawfully begotten, by the name, style, and title of Baron Metcalfe, of Fern- on the county of Berks." The Gazette also announeea, that "the Lord Chamberlain of her Ma- jades Household has appointed Thomas Uwins Esq., Royal Academician, la be Surveyor of Pictures in Ordinary to her ilajesty, in the room of Sir Angustus Wall Callcott, Royal Academician, deceased."

The Gazette contains a further notice from the Railway Department of the Board of Trade, dated on the 17th instant, and stating that the Com- missioners—
