AIRLINE MERGERS Sue—Oliver Stewart hints (December 28) at ' a

possible accession of KLM to Air Union 'at a not very distant date' and then proceeds to consider the contingent necessity of integrating the British corporations. Past rivalries aside and implementing the same theory, is it very stupid to ask whether KLM would not better merge with BEA and BOAC?

The Dutch--as the British—are of marine stock and differ from the continentals in not a few ways. Their sympathies and interests tend strongly to Britain, as is evident from the Brussels talks. To the horse marine a coastline appears a boundary, but in Dutch feeling the border, if there is to be one, lies inland and east of Arnhem. Could not a merger of KLM with the British corporations save the balance for either side and provide an appropriate bridge- head for further European integration as well?
