A BAKER'S ARGUMENT.

[To THE EDITOR OP THE 6.spsarsTon.1 Sin,—For the benefit of Sir Conan Doyle, who states in the Spectator of July 4th that he is unable to find "what fraction of a penny per loaf a five-shilling duty on corn would repre- sent," I may state that if, like the writer, he were engaged in the manufacture of the loaf, he would find that it quite represented the whole penny, and that penny would be a very serious item in the great majority of households uz the British Isles.—
