1951 and all that

Sir: I sat down to write a reasoned refutation of Mr John MacCallum Scott's article in your issue of 11 July.

On reconsideration, however, I came to the conclusion that it was enough to point out that anyone who believed the following four points all put forward by Mr Mac- Callum Scott would believe anything: (1) Winston Churchill was basically Liberal (shades of India!). (2) Selwyn Lloyd is basi- cally Liberal. (3) Lady Megan Lloyd George mellowed the Labour party. (4) America's Liberal metabolism is wonderfully sound.
