Misguidance

Sir: In Auberon Waugh's article about Ted Heath (11 July), he refers to Mr Heath inheriting an economy in 'surprisingly good shape from Mr Jenkins.' Why surprisingly good? It came as no surprise to those of us who voted for Mr Jenkins's brand of Socialism in 1966. The only surprise was that Mr Heath won the 1970 general election.

May one hope that those people who were misguided enough to vote for Mr Heath in 1970 have seen the error of their ways and will now take the opportunity of joining Mr Jenkins (surely the best Chancellor of the Exchequer since the war) in the SDP?
