Sir: Am I alone in finding Noel Malcolm's long article

on Britain's role in wartime Yugoslavia both distasteful and untimely?

As one who was close to the decision- making process in Cairo and later in Italy and knowing many of the protagonists in the article, I maintain that the truth is not nearly as conspiratorial as present day 'revi- sionists' would care to imagine. These lay great emphasis on numbers, both of the guerrilla forces and of the German and Italian divisions. But mere numbers were never the prime consideration, there was very much else.

The exigencies of war demanded harsh decisions and the present tragic break-up of Yugoslavia, and the role of Serbia in partic- ular, cannot possibly be laid at the door of those who served their country so well 50 years ago.
