The French Chamber is in a great way about the

St. Gothard Railway. Switzerland is inclined to build a railway right across the Republic, connecting Prussia, Holland, and the German Oaean with Italy and the Mediterranean, which railway is to pierce the Alps by the St. Gothard Pass. Not being able to raise all the money, she applies to her neighbours ; and Prussia, Baden, and Italy, all of which want the line, promise subventions. There- upon France sees a vision of alliances, and demands "guarantees of neutrality." We suppose it is all right, but for ourselves, we feel inclined to demand guarantees that the St. Gothard shall still be passable for wheeled carriages, that it shall not be obligatory to pass through the most glorious scene in the Alps in a railway- carriage, with windows boarded up, doors shut, and a dozen. Americans, who remark, "Waal, this is con-siderable stiflin' l"
