Decision explained
Sir: Your reason for assigning the review of Yitzchak Shamir's autobiography to James Buchan, was quite obviously not to publish a scholarly treatise on the contents of the book (Books, 30 April).
How else to explain your decision to choose Mr Buchan, and even more so, your decision to print such an outpouring of vit- riolic hatred for the subject.
You stand revealed of a virulent antipa- thy to the subject, the Jewish people and the State of Israel. You have seriously com- promised your claim of responsible journal- ism, and all for the transient satisfaction of childish name-calling.
The book review was an insult to the intelligence of your readers. But per- haps I err, and it will not insult their intelli- gence?
