Fluoridation SIR,-1 am surprised and disappointed that Mr. Nigel Lawson

should seem to have joined the 'sheep' in blindly accepting the Ministry of Health's recommendation, because of the 'overwhelming weight of medical and dental opinion.' Opinion is not proof.

Has Mr. Lawson paused to find out if there is real proof? Should he make a careful investigation, he will be very surprised at his findings. I doubt if he will discover one independent medical body who had made a deep investigation who would state that they approve of fluoridation, there being no long-term risks.

I quote Dr. B. L. M. Synge (Nobel Peace Prize winner) of the Rowett Research Institute, Aber- deen: 'Fluoride is a typical example of a trace element, which may be beneficial in small amounts and harmful in large amounts. Even if fluoride is not to be added to the water used for whisky-blend- ing in Aberdeen, the fluoride intake of the fishing community from eating sea fish and drinking strong tea is probably adequate.'
