ENTRANCE labour Meeting advertised to start at 7.30 p.m.

Absolutely nothing happened until 7.37. All eyes on entrance. From time to time a number of soberly dressed men of what the French call 'a certain age' filed down the aisle. As each appeared there was a slight shush, one or two anxious lunatics clapped madly in case it was Mr. Wilson, and then the house accorded unto each nonentity the rightful lukewarm approba- tion. At 7.45 Mr. Wilson appeared. He walked down the centre aisle to resounding cheers and about half the audience stood up to get a better look. Two elderly female pensioners who had clearly been carefully rehearsed mobbed the Prime Minister, who disengaged himself decor- ously and mounted the stage.

The applause lasted while he waved nine times with his left hand and twice with his right. As it was his birthday the crowd sang 'Happy Birthday'—but their hearts were not really in it
